Delete your account
YOo does not have a delete button in the app yet. Until it does, we delete accounts on request — write to us and we will do it.
How to ask
Send an email to support@theyoo.app with:
- the subject Delete my account, and
- the phone number on the account, in full international form.
That is everything we need to start.
How we check it is really you
We will not delete an account on an email alone. If we did, anyone who knew your number could have your account destroyed by writing to us.
So we send a short confirmation code to that number on WhatsApp, the same way we do when you register. Reply to our email with the code and we go ahead. If you can no longer receive messages on that number, say so — we will find another way to establish that the account is yours.
How long it takes
We reply within two working days, and complete the deletion within seven days of confirming it is you. We email you once it is done.
What deletion erases
- Your account and the link between your phone number and YOo.
- Your profile name and photo.
- Your encryption keys, so nothing further can be delivered to you.
- Any messages still waiting on our servers to be delivered.
- Your membership of every group you were in.
- Your account's records in our database.
Afterwards you stop appearing to other people as a YOo user, and anyone who tries to message you will not be able to.
What deletion cannot reach
Messages you already sent that arrived on other people's phones. Those are their copies, on their devices, and we have no way to reach them — the same encryption that stops us reading your messages stops us deleting them. Deleting your account does not delete your side of other people's conversations.
Deleting the app is not the same thing
Removing YOo from your phone erases the messages stored on that device, but it does not delete your account. Your number stays registered, and people will still see you as a YOo user and try to message you. If you want the account gone, ask us.
Registering again later
You can sign up again with the same number whenever you like. It will be a completely new account — no history, no groups, and other people will see you as a new contact.
What we keep afterwards
Server logs that record connections may still contain the IP address you used, until they rotate out. Those logs are not archived and are not linked back to a deleted account. The privacy policy sets out how long everything is kept.
